Responsibilities
Typical Duties
The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all-encompassing. Each person is
expected to assist in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule.
- Makes calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design such as heating and
cooling loads, lighting calculations, power distribution calculations and equipment sizing. - Layout portions of ductwork and piping systems or branch circuitry based on schematic
layout by Project Designer/Engineer. - Specialized drawings, such as plumbing isometrics and risers or electrical riser diagrams.
- Select equipment based on recommendations of more experienced staff and fill out
equipment schedules. - Generally expected to produce design drawings themselves.
- Research design options and document findings for Project Designer/Engineer.
- Provide information to the Project Designer/Engineer for incorporation into specifications.
- Review shop drawings with help from more experienced staff.
- Research code issues and ask general questions of code officials.
- Organize and maintain project files. Maintain a neat and organized work area that allows
efficient access to information required by other team members. - Assure that drawings and designs are in accordance with company production and design
standards. - Keep the Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project scope or
additional services. - Complete a minimum of 10 training hours annually towards professional growth and
development.
Limits of Authority
Has authority to perform simple to moderately complex design duties, which are checked for accuracy by themselves & others. May not exceed budgeted hours on task without approval of the Project Manager. May not change the scope of work or deviate from any other part of the contractual document without the Project Manager’s approval.
Relationship to Others
Reports to the Project Manager. Within the team, has contact with CAD designers, designers, and more experienced design staff. Has contact with equipment suppliers. Limited contact with clients and contractors. Works directly for various Project Designers/Engineers, according to assignment.
Required Skills
Knowledge and Experience Required
- Minimum 2 years’ previous design experience at the Designer level or equivalent.
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited
university or equivalent. - Experience with Autodesk Revit and load calculation software such as IES VE, Trane TRACE
3D, or Carrier HAP. Experience with IES VE is a plus. - Understanding of applicable design codes.
- Continues learning process by attending in-house seminars and continuing education
opportunities outside of the office. - Completion of the Engineering-in-training exam is encouraged.
