Union Station Multiplex

Chicago, Illinois

project profile

Size: 60,000 Square Feet
Project Cost: $4.5 million
Completion Date:n/a

Project Scope:
MEP Services

Occupying the landmark space that was originally the home of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, this spectacular first class, state-of-the-art facility is the largest full service health and fitness club serving the Chicago Loop.

The renovated space included a basketball court, swimming pool, fitness floor, aerobics studios, squash courts, locker rooms, spas, laundry facilities, offices and conference rooms. The project was completed in less than one year, in time for the Owner to take advantage of the peak selling period. Special insulation and window replacements brought the building shell into compliance with current energy codes while maintaining the distinctive appearance of the exterior. HVAC systems maintained safety and comfort in environments ranging from conference rooms to pools.

IBC Engineering worked closely with the building owner and instructors to provide the optimal design that was precise, imaginative and well-suited to the many functions of the club. Energy recovery units reduce energy costs and enhance the building environment. The club is located directly about Chicago’s Amtrak station. Working with the design team, the owner, and the train station, IBC carefully coordinated the locations and types of utilities for the club to eliminate interference with the operating train station. Although the facility is not a high rise itself, its physical connection to one required that all systems be designed to the standards of high rise construction.
