Part of the 552-acre Ryerson Conservation Area near Deerfield, Illinois, he 5,600 square foot Center is a vision of the Lake County Forest Preserve District to create an innovative space for educational and outreach programs that focused on energy efficiency, recycled materials, and water conservation.

The Center provides a home for Ryerson Woods’ Environmental Education staff and new space for public programs and school field trips. Sustainable strategies include a ground source heating and cooling system, two rain gardens, a porous asphalt parking lot, and a large underground cistern that collects rainwater from the rooftop to be used in case of fire.
