The General Mitchell International Airport Baggage Claim Building, originally built in 1953 with additions in 1976 and 1979, was due for several upgrades after 34 years.
Substantial structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades were made to the building, as well as a new automatic sprinkler system to serve the altered areas, a two-story switchgear room addition, second floor office addition, and a new mechanical penthouse. The entire lower level was also renovated; the five inbound baggage conveyors in the basement and five associated carousels on the first floor were replaced.
Architectural renovations included the replacement of most the exterior skin and the interior renovations including new finishes. Other exterior improvements included a new glass canopy at the lane deplaning roadway and traffic island. The project is also pending LEED certification.
IBC Engineering Services, Inc. provided electrical engineering design services for the entire project. This project also won 2016’s Illumination Awards (Illuminating Engineering Society) – Milwaukee Section, as well as, an Award of Merit at the Regional Level for outstanding lighting design.
